How to Remove Common Stains From Clothes
Most stains come out if you act quickly and avoid heat. Here are first steps that work for common stains. Always check the care label and test on a hidden spot first.
General rules
- Act as soon as you can.
- Blot, do not rub, so the stain does not spread.
- Use cool water first. Hot water can set many stains.
- Do not put the garment in the dryer until the stain is gone.
Coffee or tea
Rinse from the back with cool water, then apply a little liquid detergent and let it sit for a few minutes before washing.
Oil and grease
Sprinkle baking soda or cornstarch to absorb the oil, wait a few minutes, brush it off, then treat with dish soap before washing.
Sweat marks
Soak the area in cool water with detergent, or apply a paste of baking soda and water, then wash as usual.
Ink
Dab with rubbing alcohol on a clean cloth, working from the outside of the stain inward, then wash.
Be careful with delicate fabrics
Silk, wool and special finishes need gentle treatment. If in doubt, take the garment to a professional cleaner.
