How to Wash Jeans and Keep the Color
Jeans last longer when you wash them less often and more gently. Here is a simple routine that keeps the color and shape.
Wash less often
Jeans do not need washing after every wear. Many people wash them after several wears, or when they look dirty or smell. Spot clean small marks with a damp cloth.
Turn them inside out
Washing inside out reduces friction on the visible surface and slows fading. Zip the zipper and close the buttons so they do not scratch the drum.
Use cold water and a gentle cycle
Cold water protects the dye and reduces shrinking. Use a mild detergent made for dark or colored clothes. Wash with similar colors to avoid transfer.
Dry carefully
High heat can shrink denim and damage stretch fibers. Air dry when you can, hanging the jeans by the waistband or lying them flat. If you use a dryer, choose low heat and remove them while slightly damp.
New dark jeans
Dark denim may release dye in the first washes. Wash them separately at first, and avoid washing with light clothes.
